For two thousand years, there’s been a mystery in material science about how the Romans managed to build the Pantheon out of non-reinforced concrete. It remains standing, while our concrete with steel rebar struggles to last a century. This mystery was recently solved by a team out of MIT and their paper was just published in Science.
The implications are staggering. They can make stronger, self healing concrete. It can be lower cost and is a very easy change to existing production operations. Even more exciting, they can radically reduce the carbon emissions from making cement, which is the largest offender of all construction materials.
